Your First Appointment

 Here's What to Expect!

Are you considering your first-ever massage? Or maybe you’ve had massages before but not from a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)? It’s natural to feel a little anxious beforehand, but there’s no need to worry.

1. Before Your Appointment:

Before your session, you’ll be asked to complete a health history questionnaire. This helps your therapist understand any previous or current injuries, medications, or systemic conditions (like diabetes or heart issues) that might require treatment modifications.

2. When You Arrive:

I’ll meet you at the clinic in Coquitlam and guide you to the treatment room. We’ll have a brief conversation about the session, and I’ll explain how the appointment will proceed. After obtaining your informed consent, I’ll ask detailed questions about why you came in and your goals for the session.

3. Assessment and Prep:

Depending on your needs, I may perform some palpation (feeling the tissues), movement assessments, or special tests to determine the best treatment plan. Don’t worry—everything will be explained in advance so you know what to expect.

Next, I will explain how you will be positioned on the table (I usually start with you face down), under the sheet. We will have a discussion about how you will undress (always to your own comfort). Whatever you choose, you will be securely draped, and I will only uncover the areas that I'll be working on. I will leave the room while you get undressed and once you're on the table, you basically have one job: if something hurts or if you're uncomfortable, please let me know. Don’t assume anything is “supposed to hurt”, please speak up.

4. Understanding the Pressure Scale:

During your massage, I’ll use a 1-5 pressure scale to ensure your comfort:

  1. Light Pressure – Just the weight of my hand.

  2. Comfortable Pressure – Relaxing and easy to enjoy.

  3. Moderate Pressure – A balance of comfort with a touch of “joyful discomfort.”

  4. Considerable Pressure – Intense but manageable with deep breathing.

  5. Stop! – Too much pressure, causing pain.

5. Relax & Enjoy:

The goal is to keep the pressure within levels

2-3 throughout the session, occasionally reaching level 4 if you’re comfortable.

You are always in control of the pressure, so let me know if adjustments are needed.

During your treatment, it’s best to relax fully and allow me to move your limbs as needed—there’s no need for you to assist. If I require your help with a specific movement for an active technique, I’ll guide you through it. You’re welcome to ask questions or share thoughts at any time, but if you prefer to stay quiet and immerse yourself in the experience, that’s perfectly okay too.

6. Wrapping Up the Treatment:

At the end of your session, I’ll step out to give you time to get dressed. We’ll then reassess the results of the treatment and discuss simple home care exercises or advice to help maintain the benefits. Don’t worry, the exercises will be easy to follow. Before leaving, you’ll also have the option to book your next appointment. I look forward to helping you relax and feel your best!
